ECOWAS Court Orders Benin to Compensate Igboho for Unlawful Detention

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) delivered a unanimous judgment today, compelling the government of the Republic of Benin to pay Yoruba nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, a sum of 20 million CFA. The ruling cited unlawful detention and a violation of Igboho’s fundamental human rights.

In a decision marked as ECW/CCJ/APP/15/22 In Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) vs. Republic of Benin, Justices Gberi-Bé Ouattara, Sengu M. Koroma, and Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro GONÇALVES issued the order. The court further directed the Francophone nation to fulfill the compensation within three months and submit evidence of payment to the court.

Key figures representing Chief Sunday Adeyemo included legal counsel Tosing Ojaomo, Aderemilekun Omojola Esq., Dr Janet Fashakin Esq., and Irene Aclombessi, who represented the Republic of Benin in the proceedings.
