In a bid to address the ongoing tensions between Chevron Nigeria Limited and communities within its Warri exploration and production area in Delta State, the Federal Government has mandated the oil company to resolve disputes surrounding the Host Communities Trust Fund.

The disagreement, primarily involving Chevron and the Ugbororo, Ugbegugun, and Dembele communities in Warri South Local Government, revolves around the nomenclature and composition of the Host Community Trust Fund. Allegedly, Chevron’s actions are being contested by the communities, who claim a violation of the Petroleum Industry Act (2021).

Responding to the conflict, the Federal Government has urged both parties to maintain peace during the resolution process, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring prompt and equitable resolution.

At a meeting held at the Abuja headquarters of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive of NUPRC, directed Chevron to settle the matter within two weeks.

The regulatory commission outlined that the process, overseen by its Warri Regional Office, is anticipated to conclude within the stipulated timeframe, with the final report to be submitted to the NUPRC promptly.
