Abia Govt Announces Salary Cut-off for Unverified Civil Servants

The Abia State Government has declared that all unverified civil servants will cease to receive salaries as of the end of November.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Monday, following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Commissioner Kanu emphasized that the verification exercise, initiated in July, had been extended by two weeks, with the expectation that all state workers would have participated by now. However, he revealed that despite the extended period, there are still some employees who have not taken part in the verification process.

Names of the unverified staff have been prominently displayed in the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). These employees are now required to submit their documents to their respective heads of establishments, who will then forward the materials to the verification committee.

“We expect that everybody that is a staff in the State ought to have been verified. We have a good number of people that haven’t done that. Some didn’t appear at all, some did and could not complete for various reasons”, he said.

In addition to the salary-related measures, Commissioner Kanu addressed the recent closure of 197 schools by the State Government. He announced a window of opportunity for these educational institutions to rectify their status. Schools that meet the specified guidelines during this period may be considered for reopening, providing a chance for necessary improvements.
