Bayelsa Poll: Thugs Attack PDP Chieftain’s Residence, Explosive Thrown

The residence of Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, a prominent figure within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State on Tuesday was subjected to an attack by suspected political thugs. The incident, which occurred around 2 am in the Kpansia area of Yenagoa, the state capital, saw the assailants hurl an explosive, believed to be dynamite, into the premises.

While no injuries were reported, the impact of the explosive caused significant damage, with shattered window panes and a noticeable hole in the ground.

Residents nearby recounted hearing a loud blast emanating from the compound during the early hours.

“I heard a big explosion from this building around 2am last night. But I don’t know  what caused it,” a resident, who did not want to be mentioned said.

Furthermore, the unsettling events within the state continued as two unidentified individuals were reportedly wounded in another attack within the Opolo axis of the state capital, allegedly carried out by yet-to-be-identified thugs.

Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, a former Commissioner for Agriculture and Chief of Staff at the Government House in Yenagoa, remains inaccessible for comment following the incident.

Notably, his recent return to the PDP, after years of being affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), appears to have added complexity to the region’s political landscape.

It is worth mentioning that during the run-up to the Bayelsa governorship polls, Ikiogha’s political affiliation underwent a series of changes, as he transitioned from the APC to the Labour Party, eventually contesting the primary election, which he unfortunately lost to the LP governorship candidate, Udengs Eradiri.
