The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sparked controversy on Monday as it failed to comply with a Federal Capital Territory High Court order to present the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, for a hearing regarding his bail.
Emefiele was notably absent during the court proceedings, prompting his lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, to accuse the EFCC of willfully disobeying the court’s directives.

Responding to the accusations, Farouk Abdullahi, counsel for the EFCC, refuted claims of Emefiele spending over 100 days in the commission’s custody, asserting that the order was not deliberately overlooked. Abdullahi further stated that certain key exhibits, including exhibit E, were not appropriately attached to the order, potentially complicating the matter.
Despite these assertions, Justice Olusegun Adeniyi, presiding over the case, firmly reiterated the court’s directive that the EFCC must release Emefiele unconditionally or produce him in court on the next adjourned date, set for November 8.
