The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step in addressing the persistent challenges posed by flooding in certain areas of Lagos and Ogun states.

Following a compelling point of order raised by Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru (APC-Lagos) during the recent Tuesday plenary session, the Senate passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to convene a comprehensive stakeholders’ meeting.

Tinubu Takes Swift Action to Address Impending National Flood Crisis

The primary goal of the meeting would be to assess the recurrent flooding incidences in communities such as Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, and several others within the two states. The aim is to find lasting solutions to mitigate the devastating impacts of flood disasters.

The motion, titled “Flood Disaster in Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu and several other communities in Lagos and Ogun,” garnered significant support from members of the red chamber. Additionally, the Senate extended heartfelt condolences to the affected victims of the recent flooding disasters. Commendation was also given to the Government of Lagos and Ogun for their commendable efforts in managing the crisis stemming from the flood disasters.

In a bid to fortify the nation’s capacity to effectively respond to such calamities, the Senate mandated the relevant committees to ensure sufficient funding for critical agencies involved in disaster management. This includes the National Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Hydrological Agency of Nigeria, and the River Basin Development Authorities. The objective is to empower these organizations to fulfill their mandates in preventing and managing such natural disasters.

Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru, in his impassioned presentation, highlighted the recurring challenges faced by communities located in close proximity to the coastlines, particularly in Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi-Ketu in Lagos, as well as various other communities in Ogun State. The opening of the Oyan River dam was cited as a contributing factor to the repeated flooding incidents experienced by these communities.

Lagos Govt Warns of Impending Flood

“The recent release of water from the dam caused unimaginable havoc to residents’ property and livelihoods particularly on Tuesday, Oct.24.

“The residents of the areas have fled their homes and business, schools and religious centres have all shut down in the affected communities,” Abiru said.

The legislator emphasized the pressing humanitarian emergency resulting from the flood, noting that those displaced were forced to seek shelter with their families and friends.

Nevertheless, he highlighted that the Governors of Lagos and Ogun, alongside the Minister of Water Resources, had taken steps to intervene and address the escalating humanitarian challenges.
