Lagos Seals Mile 12, Owode Onirin Markets

In a decisive move by the Lagos State government, the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market have been sealed due to severe non-compliance with environmental regulations.

The Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, confirmed this development on his social media handle earlier today.

“Acting on the directives of Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI, in a joint operation in the early hours of Friday, October 13, sealed up the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road in Kosofe LG.”

Gawat cited a host of reasons for the closure, including the rampant dumping and burning of refuse, unclean surroundings, as well as clogged and littered drainages. Additionally, the government pointed out the persistent issue of illegal parking and the abandonment of trucks on major roads, causing significant traffic congestion.

This recent action is part of an ongoing crackdown by the Lagos State government on popular markets with environmental infractions.

In the past week, other markets such as Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede, and Ile-Epo have faced closures for similar reasons.

However, some of these markets were able to resume operations after meeting the necessary requirements set by the authorities.
