Protests Erupt in Nasarawa Following GEPT Verdict

Protests have engulfed Akwanga and various parts of Nasarawa State in the wake of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal (GEPT) judgment in Lafia.

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incumbent Governor Abdullahi Sule have taken to the streets, expressing their vehement displeasure over the tribunal’s decision to annul Sule’s election and declare David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the rightful winner.

The tribunal’s ruling, which was delivered in a split judgment on Monday, October 2, 2023, stated that Ombugadu had convincingly demonstrated cases of electoral irregularities beyond a reasonable doubt. Furthermore, the tribunal ordered the immediate removal of Governor Sule from office.

Reacting to this, the APC and Governor Sule have adamantly rejected the tribunal’s decision and are determined to challenge it through an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

In a show of unity and defiance, APC supporters rallied in Akwanga, brandishing banners adorned with slogans such as:

– “Akwanga people stand with the dissenting judgment”

– “Sule is our governor.”

The protesters chanted slogans such as “No to injustice” and “Tribunal must reverse its judgment.”

The situation remains tense in Nasarawa State as protesters demand a reevaluation of the tribunal’s verdict and continue to voice their support for Governor Abdullahi Sule.
