Sir Alex Ferguson’s Wife Cathy Passes Away at 84

Manchester United announced that Lady Cathy Ferguson, the spouse of the renowned former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has peacefully passed away at the age of 84.

The Ferguson family has released a statement requesting privacy during this difficult time.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

Manchester United issued a statement as well, reading:

“Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy. Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

Sir Alex Ferguson affectionately referred to her as his “bedrock.”

Originally from Glasgow, Cathy Holding crossed paths with her future husband while they were both employed at a typewriter factory in 1964. They exchanged vows two years later and proceeded to raise three children and 12 grandchildren, nurturing a relationship that endured for nearly five decades.

Lady Ferguson once recounted her initial impression of the man who would later become the most successful manager in the history of British football.

She admitted to initially perceiving him as a “thug” due to a plaster on his face from a football injury when they first met. She also fondly remembered their inaugural date, which involved a trip to the cinema and a gift of a box of liquorice allsorts, every piece of which he devoured.

“That was my romantic day,” she told the 2021 documentary Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, directed by their son Jason.

“We got married in Glasgow registry office in 1966 and that was the start. I went to my work and he went to his football.”

Upon retiring as the manager of Manchester United in 2013, concluding his remarkable 27-year tenure, Sir Alex Ferguson personally reflected on their relationship and the profound gratitude he held towards Cathy. He remarked,

“My wife Cathy has been the cornerstone of my entire career, offering unwavering stability and unwavering encouragement. Words alone cannot convey the depth of what this has meant to me.”

Ferguson has also expressed that she was the sole individual on the planet to whom he never responded with opposition.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Lady Cathy and Sir Alex’s son, Darren, who is the twin brother of Jason, serves as the manager of Peterborough United. Their eldest son, Mark, has pursued a career in investment banking.
