Tribunal to Deliver Judgment on Sokoto Governorship Election, Saturday

The Sokoto Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has announced that it will deliver its judgment on the suit challenging the election of Governor Ahmed Aliyu on September 30, 2023. This decision comes after months of legal proceedings and deliberations.

The tribunal had previously reserved its judgment back in August. The petition in question was filed by Sa’idu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who contested the election results alongside his Deputy, Idris Gobir.

Justice Haruna Mshelia, the tribunal’s Chairman, had reserved judgment after both parties concluded their final written addresses. At that time, it was communicated that the judgment would be delivered in September, and now a specific date has been confirmed.

The petitioner, Sa’idu Umar, has been challenging the election of Governor Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Deputy Governor Gobir. The basis of the challenge revolves around allegations of non-qualification and electoral fraud during the governorship election held on March 18, 2023.

In an official notice issued by the Secretary of the Election Petitions Tribunal, Sunday Martins, Esq, it has been revealed that the judgment in this closely watched case, marked EPT/SK/GOV/01/2023, is scheduled to be delivered on Saturday at 9 am.

“Take notice that Petition No EPT/SK/GOV/01/2023 will be coming up on Saturday, 30/09/2023 at 9:00 am for judgment.

“Counsel are advised to inform their clients that supporters would not be allowed into the court premises as movement would be highly restricted by the security agencies,” the notice read.
