Senate Resumes Plenary, Focuses on Key Appointments

The Nigerian Senate reconvened on Tuesday following a six-week recess, with the Red Chamber immediately entering into a closed-door session to address pressing national matters.

At the forefront of the plenary session’s agenda is the screening and confirmation of the highly anticipated nomination of Olayemi Cardoso for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). President Bola Tinubu put forward Cardoso as his nominee, and he recently assumed office as the acting CBN governor.

Additionally, the Senate is set to deliberate on the appointments of four new deputy governors, scheduled for screening and confirmation within the committee of the whole. The nominees include Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala M. Bello.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered an opening speech, extending a plea to all lawmakers with grievances to set aside their differences and collaborate under his leadership. He emphasized that the nation’s progress hinges on unity, underscoring the importance of cooperation during these critical times.
