The Minister for Sports Development, Sen. John Owan-Enoh, is poised to present Nigeria’s ambitious bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo. This meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Accompanied by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), including President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and bid Coordinator Mainasara Ilo, Sen. John Owan-Enoh will represent the Federal Government of Nigeria in advocating for the hosting rights of this prestigious football tournament.

Nigeria, in collaboration with the Republic of Benin, has jointly presented a bid to host AFCON in 2027, marking a bold initiative to bring this football extravaganza to West Africa. This bid presentation is expected to be a highlight of the CAF Executive Committee meeting.

All nations that have submitted bids to host the AFCON tournament in 2025 and 2027 are expected to be in attendance, making this a highly anticipated gathering of African football leaders. During the meeting, Nigeria will deliver a 10-minute presentation to the CAF Executive Committee, followed by an opportunity to respond to questions regarding their proposal.

The road to securing the AFCON hosting rights has been an extensive one, with CAF’s Independent Assessment Committee conducting evaluations of proposed host venues in Nigeria. These visits were crucial in assessing the country’s readiness and facilities to host such a prestigious event.

As the meeting unfolds in Cairo, all eyes are on Nigeria’s presentation and the subsequent deliberations by the CAF Executive Committee. The decision on the host country for the 2027 AFCON promises to be a pivotal moment in African football, with Nigeria and Benin’s joint bid aiming to create a memorable tournament experience for players and fans alike.
